Not every adventure has to involve hours on the road or an adrenaline rush. Sometimes, the best days are the ones spent wandering beautiful places close to home.

Jean Lafitte National Historic Park

We kicked off our June adventures with a quick visit to the Barataria Preserve, part of Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve. The boardwalks wind through cypress swamps and marshes, offering an up-close look at one of Louisiana’s landscapes. Even on a short visit, it’s easy to spot birds, turtles, alligators and plenty of signs of the wildlife that call the preserve home. It’s one of those places that reminds us you don’t have to travel far to experience something uniquely Louisiana.

Rip Van Winkle Gardens

A couple of weeks later, we made the drive over to Rip Van Winkle Gardens on Jefferson Island for a leisurely weekend morning exploring the grounds. Unfortunately, the historic Joseph Jefferson Mansion wasn’t open during our visit, but the grounds were ready and waiting. That just gives us the perfect excuse to come back.

Even without stepping inside, the property is well worth exploring. Winding paths lead through towering live oaks draped in Spanish moss, colorful gardens, and peaceful views of Lake Peigneur. It was one of those mornings where there wasn’t much of an agenda beyond slowing down, stretching our legs, and appreciating the beauty around us.

The combination of lush subtropical plants, historic architecture, and waterfront scenery creates a setting that’s both relaxing and uniquely local. It’s easy to forget you’re only a short drive from home.

We’ll definitely be planning another visit when the mansion is open. Exploring the gardens only left us more curious about the history waiting inside.

Celebrating Maggie

Of course, June wouldn’t have been complete without celebrating a very important birthday. Our sweet Maggie turned twelve!

It’s hard to believe how quickly the years have gone by. Twelve birthdays, countless adventures, and more tail wags than we could ever count later, she’s still happiest anywhere we’re together…most of the time. She’s always been part of so many of our favorite memories.

June may not have been packed with big road trips or bucket-list adventures, but it was filled with exactly the kind of moments we love most: exploring beautiful corners of our home state, spending time outdoors, and celebrating another year with one of our favorite travel companions. Sometimes the smallest detours end up becoming some of the most memorable.
